It has to be said that Mull is an island for the discerning, for those who will enjoy and appreciate its tranquillity, its wildness, the ever changing light and shade and not mind too much about the odd precipation that helps to creates that light and shade.
Mull is gaining an increasing reputation amongst those seeking to observe our varied and plentiful wildlife Birdwatchers know of our SEA EAGLES and will find lots to see and record throughout the year and even more at migration times . An unhurried walk might produce the unexpected, a seal basking on a rock, an otter even.
Choose one of the many wildlife safaris run by knowledgeable folk or a boat trip to watch for whales or to see nesting birds on outlying islands. Most of our roads are single track so progress is not rapid and does it have to be ? On holiday certainly not.
The Puffer Flat
Once part of the blacksmiths house it was from 1975 - 1995 The Puffer Aground Restaurant and it changed to self catering in 1997. The restaurant had a maritime theme and this has been maintained because it seemed appropriate to keep it. The sitting/dining area, partially panelled and with a beamed ceiling contains portholes that came from MV LOCHFYNE, the first diesel electric vessel built and well known in these parts 40 or more years ago. The late IAN ORCHARDSON'S pictures behind them depict old friends that sailed these waters for many years. There are some notes on the pictures in the folder.
Accommodation
This is broadly similar to the Smiddy and is on the ground floor both in layout and furnishings except that the bedroom has a king sized bed that will convert to twins. A cot and a high chair are available and because this bedroom is larger than the Smiddy we would advise this property if you require a cot. Like the Smiddy the Puffer is let on the same inclusive basis and similar arrangements apply with regard to winter use of electricity.
The Smiddy Flat
As you would expect this building was a smithy but probably the replacement to MacQuarie's building when he built the village, then celled Jervisfield after his first wife . It was used until after the end of World War Two and the horses came in through the kitchen window! After several uses (it was home to a 1946 Bedford lorry that lived in the sitting room until 1972) including a shop it was changed to its current use in 1997. The Smiddy gets sun most of the day which adds to its friendly atmosphere.
